Frederick Sound is a passage in southeastern Alaska’s Alexander Archipelago. It’s what divides Kupreanof Island, to the south, from Admiralty Island, to the north. As well as being a fantastic place to fish, whale viewing in Frederick Sound is a very common activity. If you want to learn more about humpback whales and how they eat, there is no better place than Frederick Sound. In the North Pacific, humpback whales have a population of around 6,000. More than half of these individuals spend the summer in the Frederick Sound area, with prime viewing occurring in the months of July and August. In addition to harbor seals and Stellar’s sea lions, there are also dall porpoises, a variety of orcas, and other whales to look out for in this region.
